Free, individualized education and health services for special needs children and their families in India.

KDB Trust operates a Day School program in Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh throughout the year. Students receive transportation to and from school, uniforms, meals, educational material and medical equipment. For over 10 years KDB Trust has identified, recruited and nurtured children with mental and physical handicaps that cannot be addressed by existing school and health infrastructure in rural India.

Early Detection

KDB trains preschool teachers (aayas) in nearby villages to screen young children for signs of developmental delays. Trained staff also work with community members to monitor pregnancies, birth, and early growth to identify and prevent potential mental and physical delays.

Individual Intervention Plan

Each student at the KDB Day School is assessed by trained staff using the National Institute of Mentally Handicapped standards.

Then a team of teachers and doctors create a unique plan based on the child's cognitive, motor, and speech development as well as general neurological, psychiatric, and nutritional health.

The plan is used by KDB day school staff, parents, and family to try to achieve growth in and outside of the classroom.

Life Skills

The Day School is designed to help students handle the challenges of every day life such as brushing their teeth, using the bathroom, bathing and dressing independently. Day School staff train parents and family members to continue education and therapy activities at home.

We emphasize social skills by involving mainstream students in physical education and school events. As part of the transition for advanced students, KDB offers vocational training in tailoring and embroidering, making paper plates, bags, and candles.

Computer Skills

The Day School uses computers to teach students a variety of basic skills such as identifying colors, letters, and sounds. KDB works closely with individual, corporate, and non-profit partners to identify opportunities and develop affordable technologies to improve services for differently-abled children in India.
